ACT Reviews 2022-2023 Season

Disney’s FROZEN Jr Directed by Gary Jones The Drama Department - Harpers Theatre I am sure that there are not many parents in the country that have not heard the song “Let It Go” from the Disney animated film of ‘Frozen’. It has since been transferred to stage as a full musical and a junior version has also been devised to capture the enthusiasm of the young. This, I can only applaud as it brings a new generation of enthusiastic young actors into the musical theatre genre. The enthusiasm, concentration and talent of the performers for this production was a joy to behold and made for a very enjoyable evening. These young performers had obviously worked hard in establishing their characters. There was a confidence that emanated from every single person on the stage area and this relaxed and engaged the audience. The three actors who played the central character of Elsa; Isla Hughes, Olivia Williams and Lois Ridgeway were very assured in their portrayal of the older sister who must keep her magical abilities under control. Lois’ rendition of the infamous, yet catchy song “Let it Go” had the audience spellbound. The lighting effects that accompanied movement to the musical number gave a special touch to transport the imagination to believe magic was happening around them. Equally transfixing were the performances of Lauren Pickles, Hannah Donaghugh and Layla Penny as the younger sister Anna. While all the performances were strong and on point, the confidence of youth shone out, especially in that of Layla’s. The strong delivery of dialogue with expression, accompanied by assured singing in time as well as movement around the stage, was a pleasure to watch in one so young. Well done, that girl!
